Rep. Correa Endorses Bi-Partisan GI Bill For Next Generation Of American Soldiers

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Correa joined with his Republican and Democrat colleagues to support a new GI Bill that will improve access to higher education for America’s next generation of veterans.

Rep. Correa stated:

“Our veterans earn the GI Bill. This bill will help them continue serving their nation by pursuing higher education and leading America forward. I am especially proud that this bill will finally recognize the service and sacrifices of our National Guard by giving them access to the GI Bill. The National Guard and our reservists fight alongside other armed forces. Now they will be treated equally. This bill will vastly improve access to higher education for our veterans in our fast-changing world.”

The bill’s proposed language includes the following changes:

  • Removing the 15-year expiration date on benefits, making them usable at any time for all recruits entering after January 1, 2018;

  • Refunding benefits to veterans who were victims of school closures;

  • Providing additional benefits for Veterans pursuing STEM degrees, and accelerated learning programs in high technology;

  • Providing access to benefits for Guardsmen, Reservists, servicemembers on convalescent medical leave, and increasing partial benefits recipients.

  • Reducing G.I. Bill recipients’ Basic Allowance Housing so that veterans receive the same living stipend per month as active duty servicemembers, not more. This would only effect veterans departing the service after the bill goes into effect.
