RANKING MEMBER CORREA CALLS ON HOUSE REPUBLICANS TO PASS CLEAN GOVERNMENT FUNDING LEGISLATION
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46), Ranking Member of the House Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee, released the following statement:
“September 30th is Congress’ deadline to fund the federal government—and we’re falling behind,” Correa said. “A government shutdown would be catastrophic to our national security. Military members will not get paid, schools across the country would not receive funding, small businesses would be unable to access SBA loans, and the Department of Homeland Security would furlough over 224,000 employees across the country. That means a border that’s less secured and our economy halting to a stop.”
While benefits like Social Security and Medicare would continue to be paid, millions of federal employees would be unable to work or be paid for their service. Most government operations would also cease, causing delays in processing passport applications, small business loans, and so much more.
“For veterans, small business owners, federal employees, and so many more, a government shutdown is unacceptable,” he concluded. “We are running out of time, and I am ready to work with my colleagues across the aisle. I call on my colleagues to put political gamesmanship aside and pass clean government spending bills to prevent catastrophe, keep our constituents safe, and our government open for its citizens.”
