REP. CORREA TO DACA RECIPIENTS: “YOU’RE PROTECTED, FOR NOW.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46) released the following statement after U.S. Southern District of Texas Judge Hanen ruled against Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA):

“While this decision does not impact DACA recipients’ current protections or their ability to continue to renew them, it is another slap in the face to the very promise of the American Dream, and our nation’s promise to those who make our communities stronger,” Correa said. “I represent one of the largest populations of DACA recipients in the United States, and see each and every day the vital role they play in our national security, and the economic and cultural fabric of our communities—and while this news is disheartening, I want to be clear that the status quo remains. To any DACA recipient reading this, know that as this case moves on to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, you’re protected—for now.”

This case is expected to be appealed to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which will likely hear the case sometime between the early Spring to Fall of 2024. As of now, there is no change for current DACA recipients. Current DACA recipients remain protected and can renew their status, and individuals still remain able to file new applications. Future negative decisions could halt the processing of new applications, and strip away status from current DACA recipients.

“My team and I will continue to be available to answer any and all questions for those who could be impacted by future DACA rulings, and I will continue to fight tooth and nail to bring my colleagues in Congress together to give permanent status to all DACA recipients,” he concluded. “Remember, the State of California has made significant progress in protecting migrant workers and immigrant students—with and without documents. I will continue to carry that pro-immigrant spirit with me as I bring this fight to Washington’s front door.”
