Correa Votes To Provide Critical Humanitarian Aid To Children Border.

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Lou Correa (D-CA-46) released the following statement after the passage of emergency funding for the humanitarian crisis along the US - Mexico border:

“There is a refugee crisis at our southern border. Six months ago, Democrats offered the President $502 million to address the humanitarian needs of Central American refugees. He refused. Now, after months of detaining thousands of families in inhumane conditions, he is once again ready to refuse funding vital to these refugees’ care.

“Nonetheless, the legislation passed by House Democrats will provide the President with the resources he needs to address this crisis. This $4.5 billion emergency funding package dedicates nearly $1 billion towards proper housing, healthcare, hygiene products, and other critical services needed by refugees.

“Additionally, it would provide Congress with critical oversight abilities, such as no- notice Congressional tours of immigration detention facilities, and statutory funding restrictions to prevent the President from diverting funds to pay for his border wall.

“Instead of addressing this as a humanitarian crisis, the President continues to treat it as a law enforcement issue. As long as he prioritizes guards over doctors, and cages over homes the problem will never get better.

“I urge the President to cast aside this flawed immigration strategy, and work with Democrats to develop a real comprehensive immigration policy that empowers America without discarding our morals and imprisoning children. There are real humane solutions.”
