Correa Applauds Bipartisan Work By House Judiciary Committee On Behalf Of All Americans

House Judiciary Committee Advances 8 bills to House Floor with bipartisan cooperation

Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Lou Correa joined his colleagues on the House Judiciary Committee to consider important legislation. This bipartisan and productive legislative markup passed eight bills that address issues faced by countless Americans. 

Rep. Lou Correa said, "The American people sent us to Washington to get things done to help ordinary folks live better lives. I'm proud of the work my colleagues and I accomplished today. Together the Committee came to many bipartisan agreements and advanced almost a dozen new bills to the House Floor. When we put partisanship aside and work together, we can make government work for everyone."

The bills brought before and passed by the Committee are:

H.R. 8225 - Fight Notario Fraud Act (Rep. Mucarsel Powell) 
This bill works to end immigration consulting fraud.  The bill aims to prevent the exploitation of immigrants and makes immigration consulting fraud punishable by imprisonment. 

H.R 8169 - Elder Abuse Protection (Rep. Garcia)
Make the Elder Justice Initiative a permanent office within the Department of Justice Criminal Division that would be responsible for helping protect seniors from elder abuse. The initiative provides law enforcement with educational and training materials designed to assist them in investigating and interacting with victims of elder abuse. 

H.R. 6813 - Promoting Alzheimer's Awareness to Prevent Elder Abuse (Rep. Deutch)
This bill would ensure that the Department of Justice's elder abuse training materials takes into account individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

H.R. 8161 - One Stop Shop Community Reentry Program (Rep. Bass)
This bill authorizes grants for community-based nonprofits to operate one-stop reentry centers. It will reduce the chance of reoffence by making basic resources available to individuals who are returning to the community after conviction or incarceration, which would otherwise not have access to them.

H.R. 7718 - Protecting Health and Wellness of Babies and Pregnant Women in Custody (Rep. Bass)
This bill addresses the health needs of incarcerated women related to pregnancy and childbirth.

H.R. 7636 - Custodial Interrogation Recording Act (Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee)
This bill directs the Department of Justice to make grants for state and local governments to record custodial interrogations.  We are working to include federal interrogations as well.

H.R. 8235 - Open Courts Act of 2020 (Rep. Johnson)
A bill that would modernize the court record system and ensure that public court records are easily accessible and not costly

H.R. 5309 - Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act of 2019 (Rep. Richmond)
This bill prohibits discrimination based on a person's hair texture or hairstyle if that style or texture is commonly associated with a particular race or national origin. Specifically, the bill prohibits this type of discrimination against those participating in federally assisted programs, housing programs, public accommodations, and employment.
