Rep. Correa Condemns Deceptive “Balanced Budget Amendment”

Washington, DC—Congressman Correa released the following statement about the Balanced Budget Amendment:

“Over the last year, Congress passed a $2 trillion tax cut and a $1.3 trillion budget bill that busted the Congressionally mandated budget caps of 2011 and ensured our nation’s deficit would exceed $1 trillion by 2020.

Today’s Balanced Budget Amendment makes this even worse by imposing drastic cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

We need to balance our budget and live within our means, but not on the backs of our seniors and those struggling the most. That is why I support the Murphy Budget Amendment, that specifically exempts Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other programs working Americas depend on every day.

The Balanced Budget Amendment cruelly cuts important programs and forces seniors and at-risk groups to sacrifice. If Congress truly wanted a balanced budget, my colleagues would have passed one three weeks ago.”
