RANKING MEMBER CORREA STATEMENT ON WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCEMENT ON BORDER ENFORCEMENT, ACCELERATED WORK AUTHORIZATION PROCESSING

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, in response to the Biden Administration announcing another series of actions to increase enforcement across the Southwest Border, accelerate processing of work authorizations, and the decision to redesignate and extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuela, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46), Ranking Member of the House Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee, released the following statement:

“As we address the increasing number of migrants crossing into the United States from Mexico, those serving on our country’s frontlines deserve every resource available to ensure that they can follow through on their duties to serve and protect,” Correa said. “Not just to protect our homeland, but to ensure those fleeing violence and persecution are processed safely, humanely, and efficiently—to decrease the burden imposed on our nation’s border communities, and ensure migrant safety.”

“I commend the Biden Administration for taking these steps today—to ensure a safe, orderly, and humane immigration system while expanding access to work authorizations for migrants. Because we can, and must, do both,” he concluded. “At a time where businesses at every level and in every corner of this country are begging for more workers, and where some of our largest cities lack the proper resources to house migrants seeking refuge, this announcement—making it easier for migrants using CBP One, the CHNV program, and TPS to access to work permits to contribute to our national economy—is a monumental step in the right direction. While I have concerns about the planned increase in the use of expedited removal for families, it’s clear must continue to invest in safe, moral border security measures, but not without continuing to make it possible for migrants to work and contribute positively to our communities—to keep our neighborhoods safe, and our local economies alive.”
