CORREA INTRODUCES HOUSE COMPANION TO HAWLEY LEGISLATION TO END UNFAIR AIRLINE PRACTICES

The End Airline Extortion Act Would Protect Americans from Predatory Airline Practices

WASHINGTON — Today, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46), the top Democrat on the House Subcommittee on the Administrative State, Regulatory Reform, and Antitrust introduced the End Airline Extortion Act, a companion bill to Senator Josh Hawley’s legislation in the Senate, which would protect Americans from predatory airline practices regarding fares and additional fees.

“Today, hard-working taxpayers in every corner of the country—and right here in Orange County—are being charged different prices for the same flights, and that’s wrong,” Correa said. “Fliers deserve price transparency and should not be subject to junk fees or surprise charges. I’m proud to join in this fight alongside Senator Hawley, and will do everything in my power to get this long overdue, bipartisan effort across the finish line.”

The End Airline Extortion Act would:

  • Prohibit airlines from paying commission or other incentives to employees if they require passengers to pay additional fees for baggage, seating, or other services as a condition of boarding a flight.
  • Ban discriminatory pricing by barring airlines from using personal characteristics—such as sex, family status, or disability status—as a basis for charging higher prices for fares or fees to passengers on the same flight.

“Airline companies treat their customers like cattle. It’s offensive. They charge fliers different prices for the same flights – and sometimes different prices for bags and carry-ons. Now they’re paying their employees bounties to harass customers trying to get on the plane. It’s wrong. And frankly, it needs to be illegal,” Senator Hawley said when introducing this legislation last week.
