Rep. Lou Correa Introduces Legislation To Censure President Trump Over Georgia Election Interference

Correa Joined 90 Members of Congress In Condemning President Trump’s Illegal Interference In Georgia Election

Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Lou Correa (CA-46) joined Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04) and 90 of his colleagues in introducing a resolution censuring President Trump for abusing the power of his office by threatening Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger with vague criminal prosecution, if he failed to overturn the finalized and verified results of Georgia’s November 2020 presidential election and pursue the president’s false claims. Georgia has conducted two recounts and has verified 99.9% of signatures on mail-in ballots.

Rep. Lou Correa said, “In 2019 the House Judiciary Committee impeached President Trump over reports he attempted to solicit support for his re-election by extorting a foreign leader. Yesterday the Washington Post published an actual audio recording of the President attempting to extort Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, by threatening him with criminal prosecution unless he found a way to overturn the will of Georgia voters. The President’s relentless attempt to overturn a free and fair election is appalling, and cannot be ignored. The President must be held accountable.

“For months President Trump has consistently alleged election fraud in an attempt to overturn the will of the American Voters. There was no widespread or systematic voter fraud in the 2020 election. The President’s own Attorney General Barr has said so. The FBI has said so. The Department of Homeland Security has said so. The Justice Department has said so. The United States Supreme Court has said so, as well as dozens of state and federal courts through the county.

“President Trump’s continued effort to muddy the waters is the greatest threat to our nation’s democracy of our time. Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State is the latest American Patriot to step up and bravely challenge President Trump’s reckless attempt to overthrow our democracy. Congress must act and demonstrate to future leaders that such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

BACKGROUND: The House Resolution condemns the President for abusing his power to pressure state elected officials to throw out verified election results. On January 3, 2021, the Washington Post published a recording of a conference call between President Trump, senior White House officials, and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and his top aides. On the call, President Trump repeatedly cited debunked claims of election fraud and pressed Brad Raffensperger to find avenues to alter the election in the President’s favor. The recording and a full transcript are available here.

The resolution is cosponsored by 90 Members of Congress, including, Rep. Hank Johnson and Reps.: Adams, Auchincloss, Barragan, Bass, Beatty, Beyer, Bishop, Blumenauer, Bonamici, Bourdeaux, Boyle, Bowman, Bush, Butterfield, Carson, Casten, Castor, Castro, Chu, Cicilline, Yvette Clarke, Cohen, Connolly, Cooper, Correa, Courtney, Danny Davis, Dean, DeLauro, Dingell, Doggett, Espaillat, Escobar, Eshoo, Dwight Evans, Foster, Chuy Garcia, Sylvia Garcia, Jimmy Gomez, Al Green, Hayes, Brian Higgins, Himes, Huffman, Jackson Lee, Jayapal, Mondaire Jones, Khanna, Kildee, John Larson, Brenda Lawrence, Barbara Lee, Andy Levin, Mike Levin, Lieu, Lowenthal, Lynch, Matsui, McCollum, McEachin, McGovern, McNerney, Meeks, Meng, Newman, Norton, Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Pallone, Panetta, Pingree, Pocan, Pressley, Raskin, Rush, Scanlon, Schakowsky, David Scott, Sewell, Sherman, Speier, Suozzi, Swalwell, Takano, Mike Thompson, Tlaib, Rice, Norma Torres, Ritchie Torres, Velázquez, Watson Coleman, Welch.
