REP. CORREA VOTES TO PREVENT CATASTROPHIC DEFAULT, SUPPORT VETERANS, AND PROTECT WORKING FAMILIES

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46) voted for President Biden’s Bipartisan Budget Agreement that protects the American people, preventing a devastating default on our national debt that would trigger a job-killing recession and raise costs for working families across Orange County and beyond.

“House Democrats made clear from the very beginning that a devastating default on our national debt was unacceptable—as were any draconian cuts to programs our working families, seniors, and veterans rely on— and, under President Biden’s leadership, we’ve stood true on that promise,” said Rep. Correa. “By standing firm, we protected millions of Americans from devastating cuts to fundamental programs they rely on and steered our national economy off of a financial cliff.” 

The Bipartisan Budget Agreement prevents economic catastrophe and protects key services like education, health care, veterans’ benefits, and housing, completely rejecting Republican draconian proposals to cut domestic funding by 22 percent. Specifically, the legislation:

  • Includes the PACT Act to expand VA healthcare and benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances
  • Eliminates SNAP time limits for veterans and people who are homeless, regardless of age, for the first time
  • Minimizes Republican SNAP work requirements by phasing in the changes and expanding the eligibility—meaning that the number of people subject to SNAP work requirements will likely stay roughly the same
  • Makes no changes to Medicaid
  • Approves $121 billion included in the President’s budget for veterans’ medical care
  • Makes no changes to the Inflation Reduction Act’s climate and clean energy provisions
  • Protects President Biden’s plan to provide student debt relief for hardworking borrowers recovering from the pandemic

“To be clear: no legislation is perfect. Negotiations require give and take, and no one gets everything that they want. That’s how divided government works. But President Biden successfully protected Democrats’ core priorities and the historic economic progress we’ve made over the past two years—preventing a catastrophic default while supporting our veterans and protecting working families. I was proud to vote ‘yes,’” Correa concluded.
