Rep. Correa Introduces Resolution

Designating August Chicano Heritage Month

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Lou Correa (D-CA) released the following statement on his introduction of a resolution to honor August as Chicano Heritage Month:

"As the son of Mexican immigrants and the Representative with a large Chicano constituency, I’m honored to represent and celebrate Mexican Americans who have contributed greatly to this country. Chicanos have contributed to the advancement of America for centuries, and it is time that this is acknowledged and celebrated.

Years before Brown v. Board of Education, it was Chicanos in Orange County who fought school segregation and won in Mendez v. Westminster. The great Emigdio Vasquez, from Orange, was known as the ‘Godfather of Hispanic artists,’ and my district is blessed with his contributions to Santa Ana City Hall. Many Chicanos have made history, and they deserve recognition to instill a sense of passion in future Chicano generations.”

Background: The resolution would officially recognize the month of August as Chicano Heritage Month promote the significant contributions of Mexican Americans in our history. The month will celebrate Mexican American heritage while simultaneously uplifting Mexican American voices and accomplishments.
