RANKING MEMBER CORREA STATEMENT ON THE END OF TITLE 42

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46), Ranking Member of the House Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee, released the following statement on the end of Title 42:

“For the past three years, Title 42 has been used to unjustly turn away migrants and refugees at our country’s doorstep—slamming the door on our nation’s commitment to protecting all fleeing violence and seeking safe-haven,” said Ranking Member Correa. “This misguided policy rightfully ends today, but we are not fully prepared to address the aftermath. The root causes of migration, more funding for asylum processing, and pathways to citizenship have not been addressed since Title 42’s implementation—and it’s shameful.”

“Now that Title 42 is no more, we should be working in a bipartisan manner to deliver the resources those on our nation’s frontlines need to uphold the United States’ obligations to all migrants and asylum seekers—not expanding programs that were designed to be punitive to migrants and their families,” he concluded. “I also continue my call on the Biden Administration to continue to expand programs like Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to address the border’s humanitarian crisis head-on, which will only worsen without investing in safe, moral border security measures.”
