RANKING MEMBER CORREA STATEMENT ON GOP’S PROPOSED COLLISION-COURSE TOWARDS A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, in response to a deal struck by the majority party and the Freedom Caucus, and their reintroduction of a version of a flawed border security bill as part of their effort to increase the likelihood of a government shutdown, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46), Ranking Member of the House Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee, released the following statement:

“Not only is this ‘deal’ unserious, it’s a political non-starter. And don’t take my word for it, ask my Republican colleagues—many of whom, too, have refused to get aboard this train to nowhere,” Correa said. “This CR walks back on our bipartisan debt-limit deal we reached just a few weeks ago. House Democrats, Senate Republicans and Democrats, and President Biden unanimously oppose their extreme cuts that will make working families pay even more for the things they need and strip the Department of Homeland Security of crucial border security funding that keeps our nation’s border protected and our communities safe.”

“What’s more, adding divisive legislation to this equation that will hurt immigrant communities and hamper our nation’s economic prosperity will do nothing to stave-off a government shutdown. It will only make one more likely,” he concluded. “I once again call on my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to put political gamesmanship aside and pass clean government spending bills—to prevent catastrophe, keep our constituents safe, and our government open for its citizens.”
