IN ORANGE, REP. CORREA ANNOUNCES OVER $3 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR PFAS CONTAMINATION CLEANUP
Federal Funding For Orange County Sanitation District Is Part Of Nearly $30 Million Correa Secured For Community Projects In CA-46 In The FY’23 Omnibus Package
ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Today, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46) joined officials at Orange County Sanitation District (OC San) to announce over $3,000,000 in federal funding to address contamination and treatment concerns of PFAS in wastewater.

This funding is part of the nearly $30 million that Rep. Correa secured for community projects throughout California’s 46th congressional district in the Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) omnibus appropriations bill, which President Biden signed into law last year. Rep. Correa worked in lockstep with community leaders to identify priorities for CA-46 constituents, and fought for them during the annual funding process.
“Orange County shines bright as a global beacon of environmental stewardship and engineering, creating solutions to the environmental issues being faced by our residents,” said Rep. Correa.“That’s why I’m so proud to deliver this critical funding to OC San, to fund this first-of-its-kind project that will eliminate PFAS and microplastics from our wastewater, and will ensure everyone that calls our community home has access to safe, clean water. This technology was invented in America, is built in America, and will benefit all of us.”

In an effort to address contamination and treatment concerns of PFAS in wastewater, OC San will construct a six-ton-per-day demonstration project called AirSCWO Nix6. This process uses water at a high temperature and pressure to oxidize complex compound materials into more basic and benign compounds. Once built, AirSCWO Nix6 can provide opportunities to solve other challenges facing OC San, including: costs of solids processing, air emission requirements for methane and power generation equipment, treatment of emerging contaminants such as PFAS compounds, treatment of microplastics, food waste utilization; and efficient use of OC San’s treatment plant properties and enhance solids recovery.
“Personally, and on behalf of OC San's Board and ratepayers, I thank Congressman Correa for his steadfast commitment to both his constituents and the environment,” said OC San Board Chairman Chad P. Wanke. “It is his vision and support that allows OC San to once again be a global leader in finding solutions to new environmental challenges. His vision extends beyond his district and benefits all of California. We appreciate his leadership and efforts that benefit all of California and look forward to working with him in the future.”
