CORREA VOTES AGAINST GOP PUSH TO UNDERMINE PUBLIC SAFETY, RULE OF LAW FOR IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES
WASHINGTON — Today, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46) voted against H.R.7511, a partisan messaging bill that manipulates a personal tragedy for partisan political purposes and released the following statement:
“This flawed legislation would not make our streets safer. It would only criminalize and demonize immigrant communities by subjecting immigrants to prolonged, indefinite detention—without access to bail!—based on mere allegations of petty offenses. It’s a brazen attempt to strip back ‘innocent until proven guilty,’’ Correa said. “This bill would also give individual states standing to override the executive branch's federal immigration policy, regardless of whether they have any legitimate interest or stake.”
“Let’s not forget that, as the law is written today, immigrants convicted of crimes are already subject to deportation,” he concluded. “Not only is this legislation fundamentally flawed, it’s morally bankrupt and un-American. That is why I voted ‘no.’”
