Correa Seeks To Improve Military Preparedness by Addressing Diversity & Protecting Veterans With FY2021 NDAA Amendments

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Lou Correa’s (CA-46) released the following statement applauding the passage of two of his amendments to the Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act:

“Each year Congress passes this critical legislation to protect our troops and our nation. This year, I have introduced two amendments to address the lack of diversity in our officer corps and the continued long wait-times faced by veterans seeking care from the VA.

“In our armed forces, Latino servicemembers are the largest growing demographic, yet Latinos continue to be underrepresented in higher ranks. This lack of representation prevents advancement and harms readiness. When young men and women enlist, they need officers who have experienced the same upbringing and communities. By expanding representation, we can ensure  Latino servicemembers have the support they need to thrive in their careers.

“We also need to finally cut through the red tape for our veterans. When a servicemember leaves the military, they shouldn’t have to fight for the benefits they earned. Having a dedicated representative from the Department of Veterans Affairs to help transitioning servicemembers will help cut through red tape and ensure veterans get the care they earned.

“These amendments will help ensure that the United States continues to keep its promises to its soldiers and veterans.”

BACKGROUND: Congressman Correa offered two amendments to the FY2021 National Defense Authorization Act:

Amendment 1: Directs the Secretary of Defense to conduct a study and report on ROTC recruitment. The report will determine if individuals recruited in different levels of education are more likely to achieve or receive recommendations for higher positions and if it impacts diversity in leadership.

Amendment 2: Directs the Secretaries of Defense and Veterans’ Affairs to conduct a study and report on the feasibility of having a VA representative present at separations courses to set up premium eBenefits accounts to streamline the identity verification process.
