CORREA QUESTIONS GOP ATTEMPT TO NUKE ASYLUM, CREATE BORDER CHAOS
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46), the top Democrat on the House Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee, and member of the House Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Subcommittee, issued the following statement in response to ongoing negotiations regarding the President’s supplemental aid package and called on Senate Republican negotiators to come back to the table with realistic border management proposals:
“Having watched these negotiations unfold over the past several weeks, it has become increasingly clear that many of my colleagues have decided to put our national security—and that of our allies—at risk for nothing more than short-term political gain,” Correa said. “To say I’m saddened would be an understatement.”
“There are currently 11 million people living in this country who lack a real pathway to citizenship, many of whom have called this nation home for over three decades and have contributed millions in tax revenue to our nation,” he added. “Proposing their deportation as a border management solution is untenable, unacceptable, and un-American.”
“Let’s be clear: in October, the President put forward a supplemental funding request that included significant investments in border security which has yet to be put up for a floor vote by my Republican colleagues—despite their cries that the President is neglecting our southern border. Their inaction has made our border less secure, and less humane,” he concluded. “I condemn this attempt to terrorize immigrant communities, cut off legal pathways, and turn our back on refugees fleeing violence and persecution in the strongest possible terms. We are the United States Congress, we can do better.”
