Correa Condemns CBP For Failing To Prioritize Migrant Care
Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Lou Correa (CA-46) joined his colleagues on the House Homeland Security Committee for a hearing on the tragic deaths of two children in Customs and Border Protection care in 2018. Through their investigation, the GAO found that CBP has misspent emergency funds meant for migrant medical care, does not properly train its employees on the medical needs of children, and does not properly track or notify Congress on the deaths of those in its care.
Rep. Lou Correa said, “For me this issue is personal. In 2018, I led my colleagues to the border to inspect these facilities following the deaths of Felipe Gómez Alonzo and Jakelin Caal. My colleagues and I have worked tirelessly to reform CBP and protect migrants arriving at our ports of entry. This GAO report shows us just how grave the problem is, and how much work we still need to do.”
