Correa Applauds President Biden For "Day One" Immigration Reform Package

Rep. Correa Supports U.S. Citizenship Act and Immediate Pathway To Citizenship For DREAMers

Washington, D.C. — Today, Congressman Lou Correa (CA-46) applauded President Joe Biden for keeping his commitment to take immediate action to protect DREAMers and modernize our immigration system. On day one, President Biden signed [6] executive orders reversing and repealing many of the Trump Administration's most aggressive anti-immigrant policies and introduced the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021, which takes bold steps to reform and modernize our immigration system. 

Rep. Lou Correa said, "For the past four years, immigrants working in our country have lived in constant fear. Today that changes. I applaud President Joe Biden for keeping his promise and putting forward bold plans to help countless taxpaying immigrants. Immigrants are our friends and neighbors. They are hardworking and taxpaying members of our society and have earned the right to stay."

BACKGROUND: On January 20, 2021, President Joe Biden signed a series of executive orders to reverse some of the Trump Administration's most aggressive anti-immigrate policies. President Biden's 'Day One' executive order:

  • Reverses President Trump's executive order excluding undocumented immigrants from the 2020 Census count

  • Preserves and fortify protections for DREAMers by restoring DACA to its 2012 status 

  • Reverses the Muslim Ban

  • Repeals of Trump interior enforcement executive order

  • Stops border wall construction

  • Launches a whole-of-government initiative to advance racial equity

The U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 takes bold steps to establish a new system to responsibly manage and secure our border, compassionately care for immigrant members of our societies, keep our families and communities safe, and better manage migration across the Hemisphere. The legislation includes:

  • Creates an earned roadmap to citizenship for undocumented individuals

  • Keeps families together and promotes immigrant and refugee integration and citizenship

  • Protects workers from exploitation and improve the employment verification process

  • Prioritizes smart border protection by supplementing existing border resources with technology and infrastructure

  • Protects migrants while cracking down on criminal organizations

  • Invests in addressing the root causes of migration

  • Improves the immigration courts and protect vulnerable individuals

  • Supports asylum seekers and other vulnerable populations
