CORREA ANNOUNCES $6 MILLION FOR CHILDREN’S HEALTH, AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN ORANGE COUNTY

Federal Tax Dollars Return Home As Part Of Nearly $30 Million Correa Secured For Community Projects In The FY’23 Omnibus Package

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – This week, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46) joined the Orange County Board of Supervisors, including Supervisors Katrina Foley (5th District) and Vincente Sarmiento (2nd District), to announce $6 million in federal tax dollars for two Orange County community projects—BeWell OC’s Families and Children’s Campus and the Orange County Housing Finance Trust—to address children’s mental health, create affordable housing, and address homelessness.

"These federal tax dollars will make a direct impact in our community—from addressing the youth mental health crisis to making affordable housing more available in our neighborhoods," Correa said. "It's essential that we keep supporting our children and their families as they work to lead happier, healthier lives--all while also addressing homelessness in our community head-on, too. Orange County thrives because we take care of each other—and these funds will help our neighbors and keep our community strong."

BeWell OC’s Behavioral Health Families and Children’s Campus will receive $3 million to provide essential mental health services, support, and resources to children under 17 years old and their families. In 2020, 51% of parents in Orange County reported that their children struggled with some form of anxiety and depression.

“The $6 million in community project funding brought home by Congressman Correa addresses the needs of our most vulnerable here in Orange County,” said Supervisor Foley. “His support means BeWell OC’s Irvine Campus will help families stay together as loved ones seek mental health treatment and the OC Housing Finance Trust will support the development of more than 136 affordable housing units in Orange County. I remain grateful to Congressman Lou Correa for his commitment to solve the homelessness crisis and provide critical mental health services to Orange County families.”

The Orange County Housing Finance Trust will receive an additional $3 million to facilitate the construction of over 136 affordable and permanent supportive units, as well as stimulate construction jobs and address homelessness in the community. In 2022, Orange County counted 5,718 individuals experiencing homelessness, with 3,057 of those without any form of shelter.

“I want to thank Congressman Correa for his support, and willingness to work with our County staff to identify the need for more affordable housing and mental health services for our youth,” said Supervisor Sarmiento. “Government, at the federal and local level, must work harder to address the underlying problem of the lack of affordable housing as the root cause of homelessness. We want to spend these dollars prudently to support efforts for our children and ensure our residents can afford to stay in Orange County.”

The $6 million in federal funding is part of the nearly $30 million that Rep. Correa secured for community projects throughout California’s 46th congressional district in the Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) omnibus appropriations bill, which President Joe Biden signed into law two years ago. Rep. Correa worked in lockstep with community leaders to identify priorities for CA-46 constituents, and fought for them during the annual funding process.
